As you will know, over the last few years the internet has really taken off and now the large majority of UK households have access to the internet. The World Advertising Research Centre has also said that in July 2008, 17 pence in every pound was spent online. It is reasons like this why so many business and charities have a website.
When it comes to making money through the internet with a website, you don't necessarily have to have an online shop / e-commerce website. Many people choose this style of website because for a lot of businesses an online shop is not appropriate, or because they do not cost as much because a lot of work has to go into e-commerce websites.

When the majority of people want to find something or a particular type of business online, they will use a search engine. It is therefore more effective to have a website that will appear higher up in the search engine results so that people find you first.
As the internet so powerful though, there are still many other ways businesses can make money online, even without a website. For example some businesses choose to sell their products on websites such as EBay or Amazon. The enables them to reach huge numbers of people without the costs of a website; however the disadvantage of this is that it is very limited what you can do with these websites because you cannot personalise them in the same way you can with a website.
There are also online directories where people add their business information, and can work in a similar way to a brochure style website. Again though the main disadvantages of this are that you can't really personalise most of these and it is often limited how much information you can add. It is still a good way to allow people to find out about what you do though, so this method is more commonly used alongside a website so that people can visit for more information on what you do.
On the internet recently, social networking websites have also suddenly taken off. Many businesses also use these now to promote their business they are able to meet thousands of new people and also offer unique opportunities to advertise to their target market. Again it is limited how much you can personalise these but of course this depends on which social networking website you choose. These websites are also used for marketing reasons as they are able see the sort of things their target market like and how best to target their product(s) at them.
A lot of businesses have also started using YouTube to drum up business. Some people love this website so much now that they even use this as a search engine because they prefer to see their search results in video form. Of course this works much better different types of businesses more than others because people are unlikely to search for videos on some products and services, especially as YouTube tends to have a fairly young audience.
In conclusion, the best way to promote your business online is with a website because of the ability to customise it in almost any way you like to make as many sales as possible. There is also the advantage of people easily being able to find it online if it is properly optimised, and can also be used alongside all of the other methods of promoting a website mentioned in this article.
